DRUG
STORE MANAGEMENT

Drug store are defined as a sub-organization in the hospital where material, drugs are held inabeyance,
till the time they are inspected, approved and stocked.

OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of drug
store management are to preserve, stock , procure, supply drugs of all types
and to maintain records of receipts and
issues of drugs.

LAYOUT: It must be located on the ground floor,close to pharmacy in an
area of about 600-1000 sq. ft. It must have 2 enteries, one for receiving and other for issuing of materials. Racks are
used for storing material and closed bins for costly items.

Products and drugs are identified on the
basis of special codes.

F,S,N : Fast moving ,slow moving,non moving.

H,M,L : Heavy,medium,light material.

Thus the fast moving material are placed
near the exit while non moving away from the exit. Heavy items at the base and
the light items on the top of the racks.

BIN
CARD SYSTEM
: a ledger or bin card has 4 codes.

1,2,3,4---(1-panel)

A,5,B,3---(2-Row)(3- Rack) (4-Bin)

It means panel A , 5th row, rack B and bin 3 material can be
entered either in ledger or bin cards in alphabetical order. They may be categorized on the basis
of therapeutic uses.

LAYOUT OF A DRUG STORE

STORAGE CONDITIONS: Drug store are used to store all kind
of material like capsules, tablets, liquid dosage forms, injections. Cold
storage for antibiotics, biological. Lock and key system for narcotics and
psychotropic substances, separate tracks for poisons.

1.Cold Storage -2-8 0C

2.
2.Cool Temperature - 8-25 0C

3.
3.Room Temperature RT--Temperature prevailing in working area.

4.
4.Warm - 30-40 0C

5.
5.Excessive Heat - Above 40 0C

STORAGE AT COOL TEMPERATURE:

LIST A:
These are the drugs that require storage at 2-8 0C . These includes Sera,
Vaccines, Whole human Blood, normal human plasma, thrombin, thromboplastin ,
cobra and viper in solution, oxytocin and vasopressin , insulin preparations ,
porterior pituitary injection, human gamma globulin injection etc.

LIST B:
These are the drugs that require storage at 8-25 0C . It includes Antibiotics,
Arsenicals, blod preprations, harmone preprations, vitamin preparation and
other.

As u asked about the difference. A drug store itself has a pharmacy and other availabilities of toilet papers,medicated soaps and shampoos etc... Where as a pharmacy is place where the prescribed medicines are compounded and dispensed. With Regards Amol Dhiman
