Association of community pharmacists of India launched at Manipal
Patients and health care professionals in India are deprived of drug information services, and pharmaceutical related services which enrich the therapeutics in developed countries. The pharmacists in our country are restricting to areas of drug formulation and related industrial aspects. The patient education which is essential for safe medication is not systematically made available through out the country. As a result of this there are many pitfalls in the health care delivery. Patients in India are at great risk of irrational use and have no resources to address the drug information needs of the patient.
On the contrary the health care system in developed countries is integrated as community pharmacists who play a key role in safe guarding the patients by explaining the prescription and making the therapy effective and safe as well. In India there are large numbers of graduate pharmacists coming out through out the country by various pharmacy education institutes. These pharmacy graduates are capable and competent enough to deliver the drug information to the needy patients.
To initiate the activities in the patient education ACPI is being launched at Dept of pharmacy practice, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences on 16th August, 2007, as national body. Prof Ballal pro vice chancellor of Manipal University who declared the association called upon the pharmacists to take up the challenge of patient education.
Prof Vinod Bhat, Registrar Manipal University, The Prof N Udupa, Principal, Pharmacy college, graced the occasions.
ACPI proposes a novel model of practice in which retail pharmacy act as facilitators.
The graduate pharmacists are councilors. The patients will be offered invitation to participate in an interactive session with the councilor. The venue and time will be scheduled and sessions were conducted. The sessions will be documented and data base of the sessions will be built in accordance with association norms. Here the win win win outcomes are planed for facilitators who earn good will of organizing the session in the community, councilors will be happy for making use of their knowledge being applied, the patient will be happy because their doubts regarding the drug and diseases get resolved.
Prof Anantha Naik Nagappa founder president of ACPI , here by calls all the like minded pharmacy graduates and institutions to join hands and make patient education a reality by community pharmacy services through out the country.
