20. Hosp Pharmacy -Th' Committee - My Experience - 4
Well, I attended the Monthly Clinical meeting, chaired by the District Surgeon.
The District Surgeon briefly introduced me along with other new doctors to every one. latter, each of us stood up and briefed our profile.
There were 3 cases on the agenda. 3 patients were waiting in the wings.
One by one the doctors who were treating those patients brought in their patient introduced the case, explained the typicality and specific nature of the case, the investigations they got done to confirm some issues and to rule out some other suspected possibilities
latter, it was an open session.
Doctors had quite a good grilling.
There were suggestions to carry out some other investigations also, which the doctors gracefully accepted and in certain cases argued out that it was not necessary
I kept quite keenly listening to the talks and discussions and was a silent spectator.
I got a call to attend the next meeting also, this time 3-4 days in advance.
In this meeting after their session was almost complete, I raised my hand and the District Surgeon announced, hei, look our pharmacist wants to say something.
In my talk, appreciated the proceedings and requested the doctors whether they could extend the discussion little further to cover the medication regimen.
I could see a surprise look on their face. The doctor who had presented the case said Mr Bhagavan, I mentioned the line of treatment also.
I said, agreed sir, but my view is we are using the hospital generics as well as the commercial brands in this hospital. I would like to know whether your patient was on hospital generics or on branded product.
Why it is so important? one doctor asked me.
I had to be very cautious.
Without bringing in any offending discussion, I said, now we are not giving any feedback to the Directorate on the quality of drugs supplied. If we really feel the hospital generics are not effective, we can make a case to better the quality of supplies.
Everybody felt relaxed, District surgeon was very happy.
One of the doctor said how can we study the issue.
I said I can help you on this issue. All I need is your permission to see and study your case sheets.
I will collect the data, prepare a report without disclosing the name of the patient and come to you for discussion. Jointly we will analyze. The summery of the outcome could be discussed in this meeting.
Dr Shivananda the Physician immediately agreed and said;
Mr Bhagavan, I have no objection if you want to go through my case sheets in the Sharavati ward.
Next day, I went to the ward at a time when Dr Shivananda was coming out of the ward. He waived at me and asked me what I wanted. I requested him to introduce me to the sister and instruct her to help me.
He put his hand on my shoulder, took me inside the ward, called the sister and said
"Me and Dr. Bhagavan' have taken up a study. I have permitted him to see all my case sheets. Please help him"
The phrase "ME AND Dr,BHAGAVAN" ... was something which I had not expected. But it made a big difference for me and made my life comfortable on job.
I started my studies. Every day I made it a point to visit the ward in the afternoon and meet Dr Shivananda once in 3 days.

Dear Sir,
It is very nice to know about the way you handled the situation..
After reading this what i feel is- If Doc's and pharmacists are given equal preference for treating patients i.e if there exists a good bondage and mutual understanding between pharmacists and Doc's then with team work definitely most of the chronic diseases and disorders can be treated and cured easily...
If we implement this through out our country then, I hope in future our India would become the No:1 country in treating any kind of diseases..

Will the hospital stops working if there is no pharmacist?
Dear Bhavani prasad,
Good to see your response.
Importance for pharmacist along with all other supporting staff does exists.
But we can find a way in only if we support the system with no assumption.
There is a lot to improve in the system. But it cannot happen like a revolution.
Reform though is a slow process than revolution and remains for long and is sustainable.
Changes under revolution is temporary.
We the pharmacist should understand that we are one of the supporting staff.
Every D Pharm / B {harm / M Pharm / PhD may not fit into clinical service.
These course have just taught us only alphabets, there is long way to learn in the field.
Look at the scenario like this;
Hospital wont run without a doctor, Right?
Hospital wont run without a Nurse, Right?
Hospital radiology dept wont run without a x-ray technician, Right?
Hospital laboratory wont run without a lab-technician, Right?
Will the hospital stops working if there is no pharmacist?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? . . . . .

It may take time as you said
Sir,
The explaination you gave is good, but the change has to start at some point and the importance of the pharmacist should be realized unlike any other supporting staff of medicine. Isnt it ???
Good to know your experience sir.

Thank you Dr Krantikumar, Yes
Thank you Dr Krantikumar,
Yes somewhere we should start.
Best point is at the acdemic level.
This can happen only when we impart both the knowldge and skill in the live environment.
All applied science subjects are taught in live environment and by people with field experience.
Why it is not so in pharmacy?

Dear Meghana,
Thank you.
Lets understand that there is no ready-to-occupy seat anywhere particularly to the pharmacist in the hospital.
we have to carve out one with our knowledge, communication skill and little strategic approach.
once you succeed, they will feel your absence a lot.

Nice way of tackling the situation
Dear Bhagavan,
I really admire your way of tackling the situation and by putting right remark of replacing some of the generic drugs with branded one, hopefully your further journey to the job will give you more ways of expressing your knowledge for welfare of patients.
