The scheme of pharmacy education needs to be evolved with a target oriented curriculum and methodology.First and foremost issue that we need to understand that 'Pharmacy' is not a class room and lab teaching subject. It is a field oriented subject. Kids have to exposed to the field reality. But this cannot happen unless the teacher comes out into the field.Almost all the pharmacy teachers except perhaps the few teach the pharmacy practice by creating an imaginary scenario and expect the students to respond to such an imaginary situation. Ex: Teacher: You pharmacist should study the prescription and dispense only when you are satisfied that the dose and schedule are correct and doesn't contain any interacting drugs. Instead why not take the students to the field where such practice (if at all) is in vogue. No need to get scared. The scenario for the purpose of teaching can be arranged in a small way in the actual field practice with the support of doctors and practicing pharmacist. I had done this exercise while I was working in Mc gann hospital Shimoga a non-teaching district hospital in the year 1978. I had requested the doctor a permission to bring the prescription to him in case of illegibility including any discrepancy.I assured him that I wouldn't send the patient back but would come personally. The doctor casually agreed. I started working. Copied showed few interesting prescriptions to him. Lo' miracle happened! He said, Mr Bhagavan, I never realized such things could happen and requested me to help him medication errors. The doctor was a senior physician in the hospital.
