Treatment in Acne
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Sun, 11/02/2008 - 06:02After bringing up the blog on hormonal acne, this time I'ld like to concentrate upon the treatments most commonly involved in medical practice by a physician or a pharmacist. Basically, few generics are employed in acne as cited below along with the details:
1. Erythromycin
It has been used as the 2nd most common antibiotic against acne. It is commonly employed as 250-500 mg tablets to be taken twice a day. It not only kills the bacterium responsible for causing acne (P. acnes), but also acts as anti-inflammatory agent and reduces the redness (rubor) caused due to acne.
Erythromycin is also available as topical preparations as Erythromycin gel, ointment etc. It is available as 2 % preparation.
Usually, erythromycin causes slight irritation on application. Oral dose of erythromycin causes stomach upset and nausea. However, unlike isotretinoin, erythromycin is well-tolerated and safe to use in pregnant women.

Eye Examination can Diagnose most of the Diseases...
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Fri, 10/31/2008 - 18:08Just as the brain is known by its ability to control the body, similarly eye has been exploited to an extent to make it call by its ability to diagnose most of the health hazards.
The unconventional high-tech eye scans can be employed to detect the potential health hazards. Detecting few of the common known eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration etc. can be effective indicators to know an underlying patient health problem. The tests offered by high street opticians and optometrists provide high-quality images and thus improve chances of detecting conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetes and brain tumors.
Since the eye has a huge potential as a means of diagnosing illness early, wherein internal blood vessels and nerves can be viewed working undisturbed, a lot of opticians are embracing this and have exploited its commercial and diagnostic potential.

Hormonal Acne
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Thu, 10/30/2008 - 07:29This short blog is intended to provide the information on the role of hormones in acne appearance and the involved causal factors. Comments are welcome!
Acne is particularly precipated by the hormone, androgen present in both males and females. This is because the hormone helps in maturation of sebaceous glands. This hormone causes acne by creating an oil plug, thereby clogging the hair follicles. This oil plug provides a favourable environment for the acne bacteria, Propionibacterium acne to grow. This resultantly creates acne pimples and blemishes. Besides the androgen, progesterone has also been reported to cause maturation of sebaceous (oil) glands.

IDO in inflammation; it's role in anti-carcinogenesis
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Mon, 10/27/2008 - 21:34A chronic disease can cure a cancer well enough; indeed a new study conducted by scientists of Medical College of Georgia have employed a potential defence mechanism- inflammation, triggered by the body itself to cure cancer.
Methodology
The researchers dosed a mice with a potential carcinogen concurrently with a poison ivy derivative applied over a small portion of skin twice in a week for 20 weeks.
IDO
Indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is an immunomodulatory enzyme secreted by some alternatively activated macrophages and other immunoregulatory cells.
