Histamines and Anti-histaminic Drugs-Part-I: Introduction
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 15:36In this week, I would like to give a brief introduction about an essential autocoid, i.e- histamine, various characteristics associated with it, role played by it and few histamine antagonists used commonly.
1)Histamines—
1.1) Definition and Category--
Histamines come under the category of autocoids (self healing elements of the body derived from two words-‘autos’ meaning self and ‘akos’ meaning healing). Histamines are derived primarily from cells and tissues, as indicated by the word ‘histos’ meaning tissues.
Histamine is chemically β-imidazolylethylamine. It may be represented by the chemical structure as drawn below:

My 11th hour panic brought me unexpected success...!!!

A notice on College Notice Board...
It was morning time on 14th february, at (near about) 11:30 am when i approached my college notice board to see if any new notice had been put up. I was in a hurry since i had to attend my regular lecture. Suddenly my eyes noticed a paper reading "Skills-Test-2008" being put up on the notice board.I rushed through it vaguely.Basically, I couldn't grasp much of the details in that state of hustle and bustle. I was bit excited and surprised to know what the competition was all about and gave a thought of participating in it.

Nutrigenomics
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Sat, 03/15/2008 - 19:26Introduction
Nutrigenomics
is a very recent branch that deals with the effect of nutrients on body, particularly it's genome, proteomics and metabolomics and vice-versa. To explain it in greater depth, it simply means that what effect does nutrients produce on body's transcriptional ability, metabolising process and capacity and also protien synthesis. Nutrigenomics doesn't simply confines within this 'small circle' but extends to even more complex domain of body's homeostasis maintainance and regulation.
Study of Nutrigenomics
Not much has been studied about Nutrigenomics till date and the field is still in it's infant stage. Though study and research is still goin on, but a short method may be described involved in it's study.

Colloidal system:A Pharmaceutical Giant---Introduction
Submitted by Shubhranshu Gupta on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 08:18What are Colloids?
Colloidal System is defined as the heterogenous biphasic system in which the dispersed phase ranges within 1-10 angstrom to few micrometres in dimensions. This dispersed phase is nothing but the colloidal particles or colloids.
A colloidal system differs from other heterogenous and homogenous solutions in terms of the size of dispersed phase.
e.g- True solution has a size range of its dispersed phase less than 0.01 micrometre; While that of a heterogenous coarse dispersion varies between 10-1000 micrometres.
Examples of pharmaceutical colloids--silver colloid (germicidal),Iron-dextran injection (official and used in treatment of anaemia administered intramuscularly),Iron-sorbitol injection (consists of citrate, sorbitol and dextran complexed to ferric ions) etc.
Characteristics/Features of Colloids
