Recently I had opportunity to have interaction with Dr. Kiran Majumdar Shaw the biotech entrepreneur and Managing Director of Biocon Limited. I am so much delighted to write about it and share with all of you the moments I saw.

She presented a slideshow which described the growth & developments of Biocon. After that we had an interaction session. The complete program lasted for about one hour.

While studying medicines we study the side effects & adverse effects too, but many times we forget about them In today’s world where self medication is becoming common we face many problems & health risks that arise due to side effects.

Side effects: Problems that occur when treatment goes beyond the desired effect. Alternatively, problems that occur in addition to the desired therapeutic effect.

 “More than 60,000 branded formulations are available in India. These preparations contain either single drug or drugs in fixed dose combination (FDC). All formulations are used for treatment or prevention of diseases. Out of it only few drugs are lifesaving and essential drugs, otherwise maximum of them are available as alternative or substitute to each other.”

With research moving with lightening speed & researchers doing their all efforts the medicine world has came up with many new drugs & also found new targets for the action of drugs. Despite this all these efforts go in vain when the high cost makes such drugs out of reach of common man & it becomes more difficult to eradicate the disease.

Let’s hope to get some solution to minimize the costs of medicine & also search for alternatives to these costly medicines to help all get the right medicine at right time.

Everyone loves freebies, and medical practitioners are no exception. So drug company sales representatives try to keep sample cabinets in medical offices well stocked with the latest medications, for doctors to dispense as the need arises.

Where it was once the case that pharmacists stayed within the dispensary compounding/dispensing medications; there has been an increasing trend towards the use of trained pharmacy technicians while the pharmacist spends more time communicating with patients.” 2
