In 1990 Hepler and Strand defined pharmaceutical care as:
“Pharmaceutical care is the responsible provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improves a patient’s quality of life”.
In 1998 FIP adopted this definition with one significant change as:
“Improve or maintain a patient’s quality of life”

Dear Friends
I want to take this opportunity to tell all of you about what a group discussion is. A group discussion is something where all the participants express and exchange their views. The discussion should go smoothly without any turbulence and when it ends there should be some positive results.

It was quite interesting to know about pharmacist’s database (PDB) in Canada. I was reading an article in one of the pharmaceutical journals, CPJ, and surprised to know about pharmacists growth versus Canadian population. Read this,

Total number of active pharmacists registered in Canada grew by almost 33% between 1995 and 2005 where as the Canadian population grew by only 10 % over that period, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). There were 29,471 registered pharmacists in 2005, an increase of more than 7200 over the decade, says CIHI.

Higher pharmacist growth was seen in Prince Edward Island by 42.9% in comparison to other provinces in Canada. On the other hand, Northwest Territories showing 40.5% decline. Overall one third of pharmacists are in Ontario.

Prof Anantha naik nagappa,
Association of community pharmacists of India launched at Manipal

Patients and health care professionals in India are deprived of drug information services, and pharmaceutical related services which enrich the therapeutics in developed countries. The pharmacists in our country are restricting to areas of drug formulation and related industrial aspects. The patient education which is essential for safe medication is not systematically made available through out the country. As a result of this there are many pitfalls in the health care delivery. Patients in India are at great risk of irrational use and have no resources to address the drug information needs of the patient.
