Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is a hormone and neurotransmitter that is widely distributed in nature. In animals, it serves regulatory purposes in the central nervous system (CNS) and in several peripheral organs. In the human brain, serotonin is involved in numerous physiological functions, including sleep, pain, appetite, sexual behavior, and mood, and is the precursor of the pineal hormone melatonin.
