It is 120 mm of Hg systolic and 80 mm of Hg diastolic; commonly written as 120/80 mm of Hg in clinical examination form.
Blood pressure more than 140/90 mm of Hg in three different readings is termed as hypertension.
What is so dangerous about hypertension?
Hypertension is hazardous as the increased pressure of blood in the arteries destructs their wall leading to atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries). Atherosclerosis in turns causes ischemic heart disease, stroke, ischemic bowel disease and many more diseases. All these conditions are life threatening and must be prevented as we all know that prevention is better than cure.
How to prevent it?
Here are few tips I would like to share with you people as how to prevent hypertension or high blood pressure;
u Lifestyle modification - although it is a very simple term, however, it encompasses a large number of measures to be taken like;
- Physical activity - physical activity is a must to prevent hypertension. It should be performed for at least 40 minutes keeping in mind that the minimum heart rate attained during this is 180 beats per minute.
- Dietary modification - it includes use of fresh green vegetables and fruits daily. Studies have shown that fruits and vegetables are rich in certain antioxidants that prevent narrowing of blood vessels. Moreover, avoiding use of fatty foods and promoting use of white meat is also helpful in prevention of this disease.
- Quit smoking - smokers should quit smoking as it increases the risk of hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
- Decreased intake of salt - salt must be reduced in the food as it increases the water retention and increases the blood pressure, especially in genetically predisposed individuals.
u Stress management - certain studies have shown that continuous stress may lead to the activation of sympathetic nervous system and causes hypertension. So, you should make your life stress free, easy going and happy if you want to live longer.
