Abstract:

A study was undertaken to find out the viscosity changes of aqueous solution of an emerging pharmaceutical excipient Gum karaya (GK) and modified form of GK (mGK) in comparison with that of guar gum (GG) on long-term storage. It was found that GK and mGK showed no significant changes in their respective viscosities. However, the viscosities of GG aqueous solutions were significantly decreased on long-term storage. Viable count and anti-microbial activity studies confirmed the antimicrial activity of GK and mGK. Aqueous solution of GK exhibited high~st anti-microbial activity and low viable count among the studied excipients. The order of anti-microbial activity is GK>mGK>GG.
