Every where the word that is sounding high is “SWINE FLU” also referred to as “PIG FLU” or “HOG FLU”.
It is a friendly but Deadly virus.

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. Right now there is very worst condition with this virus in United States…..

In response to an intensifying outbreak of new strain of swine influenza A (H1N1) in the United States and other countries, World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5 on April 29, 2009.

A Phase 5 alert is a “strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.”

The United States Government has reported 141 laboratory confirmed human cases, with one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection including nine deaths by May 1st 2009.

In response to requests from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on April 27, 2009 the FDA issued Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) to make available diagnostic and therapeutic tools to identify and respond to the swine influenza virus under certain circumstances. The agency issued these EUAs for the use of certain Relenza (Zanamir) and Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) antiviral drugs for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses, however, the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery without requiring medical attention or antiviral drugs and for the rRT-PCR Swine Flu Panel diagnostic test.

Even though we (Indians) are in safe zone, high attention is given over the passengers coming from infected countries in all the 15 international airports.

I would like to invite the readers to contribute, discuss or make queries about this Swine Flu infection in the form of comments.

H1N1 Flu Update 05/07/09

5

Sweden and Poland reported their first cases Wednesday.

_U.S. health officials say it took only 2 weeks to identify the genetic characteristics of the strain, and they are in good position to quickly produce a vaccine.

_Canadian scientists have genetically sequenced the virus, a breakthrough they hope will help identify the origins of the virus and reveal how it spreads and mutates.

_WHO calls a meeting of flu experts next week to discuss whether drug companies should switch their production from regular flu vaccine to pandemic vaccine.

Hello sir,
that is a very nice and usefull inofrmation u shared with us.
Flu funda is very much fatal and common in all the countries whether it is bird flu, swine flu or other.Hereby i wanted to ask that What are measures suggested for the common man for the prevention of it? and what would be the duty of a pharmacist during such period.

As i think that's not only the government who has to take necessary measures for the prevention we people should be aware of everything.

Dear sir,
The information provided by is really good and useful. I heard in the news that this viruses will not survey at temperature at or above 40 degrees centigrades.
As india is having summer with varying temperatures between 35 to 52 degrees centigrades. with an average of 43.5 its not favourable conditions for this viruses.

Yes, may be one of the factor...

Dear Zarrin faria,
For easy growth and quick spread the low temperatures may be a cause but not the only reason.
But high temperatures in india is a favour condition to the people as the viruses will die at or above 40 degrees centigrades.o

Dear Eswar.....
you mentioned that we Indian are in a safe zone till now....but i have heard that alert has alredy been declared in Tripura against the "swine flu"...in such a situation how safe are we and for how long......because in my opinion if the virus hits India it is gone to spread at a much faster rate than in US or Mexico, and the number of casuality that it will cause will also be much higher.....

Social distancing is key to success to preventing spread

It may become a major problem if public awareness is not there.... Prevention is better than Cure ...

Simple Steps That Can Stay  Healthy and Save Lifes

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you get sick and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Zarrin Faria's picture

i agree to your point....but

i agree to your point....but even maintaining social distance is not very helpful...what are the options for prevention in that situation....i maen for swine flu...what r the precautions that can be taken to prevent swine flu....besides to implement all the social distancing measures you need to have educated people who can understand the importance of the measures...or you will have to educate the people which will definitely take a lot of time???
Most of the population in India is illiterate....

KHAN's picture

iIliterate is an excuse

Illiteracy  and  too much population is  biggest excuses politicians always use to run away from the problems in India.   We as a medical community should come out with solutions with in our limits.

Don't think in USA everyone is literate .

But in USA,  along with other medical profesinals community pharmacists are doing great job talking to patients about these simple but powerful measueres described above . Those are not mine they are from official CDC H1N1 Flu website.

In India  lot of pharmacy professionals , pharmacy students  out cry for respect in community .   For them here is the oppertunity  to gain reputation  or respect from the community by helping them  in following ways

1. Talk to the local pharmacists/ pharmacy owner and make sure he/she is aware of what is h1n1 virus and above precautions. Each one serves hundreds of people every day .  He/she can influence lot of people

2. India has 700 pharmacy colleges . From each college, 100 pharmacy students volutered and  go outside to educate pharmacy owners ..its total of 7,000 people working on educating people .....I guess India has more than 50,000 pharmacies . Imagine how much impact we can make without blaming govermnet .

3. In Pharmacy colleges in India, we make campaigns and runs during pharmacy week.  We have to make runs when people really need help not when we need pictures for college magazines . Then only we gain respect from Doctors and common people (community).... Otherwise we will end up as paper tigers crying for respect ...... Other parts in the world pharmacits has respect, because they earned it by "practically" helping them over years ........ .

Zarrin Faria's picture

I respect your feelings and

I respect your feelings and suggestions as a pharmacists....But we cant compare USA with India
USA is a developed nation ,has a very strong healthcare system, the value the life in people which is true both for the goverment and the people.....these are some attributes which we lacjk in Inida...this is a fact...
We cant be sentimental about this.....we weill have to think practically about this....
As far as pharmacists in Indian system is considered,we are still struggling to get our part of position in the healthcare system......

What would you do

If you think practically

1) What would you do personally
2) What do you think government should do ?

Zarrin Faria's picture

As a pharmacist i will

As a pharmacist i will provide as much health from my side i could do...probably i would follow all the steps which you have mentioned in your previous comment....
In my opinoin it would be best if the goverment could take the strictest of the measures to prevent the entry of the virus into the country...because once it enters the goverment would have very little option....
I say this because educating millions of people specially the villagers and the people living in slumps and the poorer section about following hygiene ...which will be the strongest weapon to prevent the spread will be a very difficult task almost next to impossible...wat do you think about this???

Mankind

Mankind survived milions of years with out so called " literacy" . Human beings faced many epidemics like this even before they had this formal education degrees like now....and what exact "strict measures" do you think Indian government take to prevent this Virus ?

Zarrin Faria's picture

i m sorry to point out but

i m sorry to point out but you are wrong in commenting that mankind survived millions of years without literacy.....education and literacy was two important aspects which the human civilization have always paid special attention...human civilization has witnessed great scholar in the past ages likes scorates.....
literacy is what makes us different from animals ....and has made us the superior among all species....
In the past epidemics has taken tolls of human life which we don't see know and it is because of the formal degrees and the education system which produce doctors and scientist who develop new medicines and medical technologies to combat the threat of diseases and epidemics and pandemics....
Strict measures include strict check up at the airports, road ways, water transport through which the virus may enter the country by mean of a foreign visitor........

Educated

Educated and Literate people should suppose to spread the KNOWLEDGE ( precautions , prevention, cure methods) to the poor illiterate people instead of spreading FEARS like "in my opinion if the virus hits India it is gone to spread at a much faster rate than in US or Mexico "......Hope you understand where i am coming from

Zarrin Faria's picture

I dont agree to that..... I

I dont agree to that....
I would like to suggest that a healthcare profession living i the country knows the health sector and hygiene practice of the country in a better manner, therby i still support that it would be a worst condition in India.....
