Synthesis of alternating hydroxy- and methyl-substituted hydrocarbons
High-field region of the 500-MHz absolute value mode 'H-I3C long-range correlation spectrum of a sample of 4 mg of coenzyme B,,, dissolved in 0.35 mL of D,O. The measuring time was 15 h. The lowest contour level in the upper half of the spectrum (above the drawn line) has been chosen 3 times higher than for the lower half, because, at lower contour levels, tl noise from the intense methyl signals starts obscuring the connectivities of interest. At the top of the spectrum, the conventional 'H-decoupled I3C spectrum recorded on a JEOL GX400 spectrometer (using 50 mg of sample) is shown. Incompletely suppressed direct correlations, marked by vertical bars, are observed for the methyl groups C53, C35, BIO, B11, C54, C25, C47, and Pr3.I' Resonances that are folded in the I3C dimension are labeled "F".

Also Known As...The Value of Generic Names
In the world of pharmaceutical names, the trademark has always been the star, and every other word has played a supporting role. But recent developments at FDA-and the industry's response to those developments-have set the stage for a new approach to nomenclature. In July 2001, when Texas Biotechnology and its marketing partner GlaxoSmithKline failed to persuade FDA to accept a proposed trademark for argatroban, a new anticoagulant, the companies gave up their equity interests in a trademark and brought the product to market without a brand name. That may be the first time a major pharma company has gambled away all future brand equity in exchange for an immediate product launch.

All countries are now aware of the problems of resistance to antibiotics, as well as general problems of basic hygiene and cleanliness in treatment centres, which are always with us. However every country has different patterns of training and working practices, prescribing, and willingness to spend money on the problems. It is clear from our survey of current practices that pharmacists have an enviable training program, role and status within Dutch hospital pharmacy, while countries such as France admit they have been too lax in their attitude to antibiotics and are trying to catch up. Hopefully the EJHP is playing a its part in letting people learn of good practice in other countries.

Investment Insight: Filling the Void
Wall Street-Stem-cell research can be an incredible win for the pharma industry, even though the uncertainty associated with the field typically makes venture capitalists shy away from investing in it. Ira Leiderman Consider the limits the Bush administration has placed on financing for stem cell research-to a specific number of cell lines in existence as of 9 August 2001. That means virtually all government funding will come from the National Institutes of Health and involve only pre-existing stem cell lines and those derived from sources other than human embryos, such as umbilical cord blood.
