Symptoms

1) Even before a person actually come to know that he is suffering from cold sore, he/she might experience a burning or tingling sensation in the affected area.

2) This symptom is followed by occurance of small blisters within few hours or days.

3) Gradually, the area becomes reddened (rubour) and the blisters become fluid-filled.

4) However, when cold sores actually occur, the blisters dry up rapidly leaving away the scabs that may last for few days depending on the severity of infection and extent of inolulation.

Seeking Medical Help

The question is when to go for a visit to health care professional? The patient suffers from fever, swollen glands, bleeding gums, and many painful sore(s) around the mouth (gingivostomatitis) after infection. Knowing these symptoms. he can be sure that he needs a medical treatment and visit to a physician.

Prevention and self-help

People with cold sores should wash their hands properly and frequently especially after touching the face and/or blisters. Sharing must be avoided with other people; especially cups and eating utensils. Cold compresses may relieve pain temporarily.
