This would be my first blog related to pharmaceutical management and pharmaceutical marketing fields. I have decided to present this blog to emphasize the growing craze in today's pharma students regarding opting for Pharmaceutical Management/Marketing as their option for M.Pharm. Through this blog, I would just try to show how and on what basis today's pharma students' trend is getting more and more inclined towards these prospective fields. Comments are always welcome!

To start with, I would like to accredit this blog to few of my fellow college friends (sorry for not posting their photos due to few personal reasons):

1) Anand Gupta
2) Amit Kela
3) Abhishek Singh
4) Deviprasad Mishra

Through this blog, I am trying to demonstrate that today there is an inclination of pharma students towards approaching for marketing/management for their masters; Not general management as the case appears, but the specialized branch of Pharmaceutical Management/Marketing. As one of my fellow participant, who is already in the field, had said that this course is not offered by many institutes in India, still the demand for this stream is on its verge of rise; probably due to the demand of such students in the industry who can handle management as well as are well familiar with pharmacy practice and health-aspects involved in study of drugs.

Looking at the students' side for this craze, what was found was that students opt this course for few major reasons like;

1) Brighter Scope in Industry; both Financial as well as positional scope.
2) Better chances of getting a higher payable job.
3) Inclination towards market research and events.
4) High knowledge in sales and marketing.
5) and last but not the least; More interest in marketing than in health.

These are the reasons which I had found in most of my friends who wish to opt for marketing field. Though there may be other reasons too, but they differ from person to person based on their interests, scenario they have seen etc.

Few students wish to go in Pharmaceutical Marketing because they wish to retain both pharmaceutical studies as well as marketing reads.

Earlier, students were having more favour for pharmaceutics, pharmacology etc. and pharmaceutical Management hadn't gained much recognition earlier in India and is of recent origin. Inspite of its infant stage in India, this field has grown at a rapid pace and has become successful in attracting attention of many pharma students. Now one may not deny the fact that Pharmaceutical Management/Marketing might be one of the fastest growing pharma fields in India.

This field would surely benefit pharma industries by leaps and bounds. Moreover, attracting more and more of really bright students, soon there will be a time when seeing this field offering a huge annual salary won't really surprise us!

Doing specialization not only provides financial and positional scope but it also helps in connecting the Pharmaceutical aspects together with the management studies.
In this dynamic era studying Managements subjects with Pharmacology ( In the syllabus of M.Pharm. Pharmaceutical Marketing, Manipal) gives the students an edge over MBA students in taking various decisions and handling problems in Pharmaceutical companies.

Nice info.

Dear Gupta,

Congratulations for presenting a brilliant blog.!I agree with your opinion about the growth of marketing in pharma field..I would like to emphasize on the reasons you have given for the selection of this course by the students. Better scope in the industry , high salary, to gain knowledge etc. are the aims of every students at any field..they are not at all bounded to marketing..I cant agree with you for your 5th reason..In pharma marketing, the students are taught about every aspects of marketing the drugs in an ethical manner..making money at anyhow or at any cost is not thte objective..a big portion of the syllabus includes legal and ethical aspects in pharmaceutical marketing..your point
"More interest in marketing than in health" is depending upon individual perception..Even a man doing research may have interest to make money in unhealthy way..framing a personal code of etrhics is necessary in every field...am I right?waiting for your reply..

You are right...

Dear praseen, i definitely agree with you... Even the point of emphasis you laid had come up in my mind earlier... But seeing and enquiring few of my friends (who think that pharma marketing has more financial purposes rather than health; and I had many debates on that topic with them!) I had to negotiate with that fact you cited about...I was knowing you would certainly comment on this point! Hope you understood the situation...But Iam really happy that you corrected it in my blog...Thanks...

fresher...

Dear praseen, the field of pharma management certainly deals with legal and financial aspects which are taught in no other branch of M.Pharm....right? So, it does give an upper thrust for management studies more over health...Because,before gaining entrance to the field every student doesn't know that it deals equally with finance and health...So, dont you agree with me now supposing if you would have been a B.Pharm student??
