Natural Excipients.
1. ABSORBENT COTTON.
Cotton consists of epidermal trichomes or hair of the seeds of cultivated varieties of Gossypium hirsutum or other spieces of Gossypium family.

What is it made up of ?
Raw cotton contains about 90% of cellulose 7 to 8% of moisture wax, fat while purified cotton consists of cellulose with 6 to 7% of moistrue.

How/Where is it useful ?
Cotton is used as filtering medium for liquids and in surgery as dressing for burns and wounds in order to prevent the access of pathogenic germs and to absorb discharge.

2. AGAR
Agar is the dried hydrophilic gelatinous substance extracted from Gelidium amansii and several other spp of red algae like Gracilaria and Gelidaceac.

What is it made up of ?
a. Agar consists of two different polysaccharides, agarose and agaropeetin.
b. Agarose consists of D-galactose and anhydro L-galactose units and is responsible for gel strenght of agar while agarpectin is sulphonaged polysaccharide in, which galactose and uronic acid units are partl esterfied with sulphuric acid and responsible for viscosity of agar solution.

How/Where is it useful ?
Agar is poor emulsifying agent but it produces viscous mucilage or gels.
It is included as stabliser in acacia emulsion. It is also employed in preparation of cultural media.
