Classification of Natural Excipietns
Excipients are obtained from various natural sources, they are used in the preparation of wide range of dosage forms.
Their large number and varied occurance, several uses make them difficult to put them in uniform pattern.
1. Based on origion .
It is of three kinds,
a. From animal,
Beeswax,
Cochineal,
Gelatin,
Honey,
Lactose,
Spermaciti,
Lanolin,
Musk,
Suet etc.
b. From Vegetable,
Kokum butter,
Pectin,
Starch,
Peppermint,
Cardamon,
Vanilla,
Tumeric,
Saffron,
Guargum etc
c. From Minerals,
Bentonite,
Kieselghur,
Kaolin,
Paraffins,
Talc,
Calamine,
Fuller's earth,
Asbestos etc.

Good question, Lanolin is purified wax obtained from the wool of sheep. Its used in the preparation of pomates, rouge waxes, sunburn cream, sunscreenlotions, hair straightners, eye shodows and in cold creams.

The composition of fullers earth varies, this is good example
In 2005, the United States of America was the largest producer of fuller's earth with almost 70% world share followed at a distance by Japan and Mexico, reports the British Geological Survey.
Fuller's earth usually has a high magnesium oxide content. In the United States, two varieties of fuller's earth are mined, mainly in the southeastern states of the United States of America. These comprise the minerals montmorillonite or palygorskite (attapulgite) or a mixture of the two; some of the other minerals that may be present in fuller's earth deposits are calcite, dolomite, and quartz.
