Dear Friends, as we know we do not really learn Ayurvedic or Homeopathic medicine thoroughly during our regular studies, but we do have some introduction to them. Some universities have started B Pharm (Ayu) & M Pharm (Ayu). These are being said to be the requirements of the industry. Although some of them are not approved by UGC or AICTE they are getting good support from national and international students.

  • There are some points which can be discussed and have some appeal to support these courses.
  • The philosophy and principles behind the therapy differ from other systems of medicine and thus we need to study them.
  • There is presently a good demand for herbal, Ayurvedic medicines & supplements.
  • Some of the Indian herbal formulations are banned due to their toxicity profiles.
  • There are less known standardization procedures for the may of the herbal formulations.
  • The formulations contain adulteration, substandard drugs and many a times improper drugs are being used due to improper knowledge about the traditional herbs used in those formulations.
  • The education provided in our regular courses is not sufficient to handle the manufacture and research in the industry.

The main aim of these courses should be to produce high quality technologists having capacity of producing quality Ayurvedic drugs by employing traditional, modern or upgraded or modified traditional techniques and also to control and maintain their quality. The course should be planned in such a manner that personnel completing it should be capable of meeting different requirements of both manufacturing and consumer sector for Ayurvedic drugs and other traditional systems of medicine.

These courses will provide in depth knowledge of Ayurvedic drugs, their method of manufacturing and also their standardization and quality control aspects.

What is your view regarding these courses, are these going to be really helpful or are these going to add just another batch of pharmacists working for herbal drug industry. Do you think the step if supported by government can actually help to utilize the knowledge of Ayurveda by pharmacists in a proper way to help society?

I await your comments and veiws.

Ayurveda has its own principles

lucky_pharmacist's picture

Ayurveda has its own principles that are different from the other medicine systems. It describes many diseases & specifies remedies in accordance to it. There are very few diseases which cannot be treated, but still efforts can be made to treat them by combination of therapies. Thus we can help to cure most of the patients and make our world healthy and disease free.

Must Be.......

I see Ayurvada Pharma course as new hot field which will attract many people.

Yes..

eswar's picture

Dear Lucky,
Yes, we are in deficit of worthy perachers in Ayurveda and as we see in M.B.B.S we had e-learning data base (for e.g., generated by MedRC), In the same manner if the ayurveda is also considered we can feel that some of the essence can be kept for further benefits and still generation of new candidatures can be made possible.
Thats my opinion.

Ayurveda & e-learning data base

lucky_pharmacist's picture

Dear Eswar, Ayurveda & e-learning data base is also a good topic to discuss and I'll surely try to present one blog on this topic. But as you know the traditional knowledge is vast and there is difference in the views of the experts. Lets hope to see something good and better in near future.

Good point!

Dear Lakshya, it was a nice point to be discussed...Today compared to allopathic medications, ayurveda drugs have shown better patient compliance, though they act slower than the former...But encouraging this course would definitely help in showing better promise in patient's acceptability and drug efficacy, putting Adverse Reactions to their minima...

It really is important topic

lucky_pharmacist's picture

Dear Shubhrashu, It really is an important topic and has a need to be supported by the competent authorities. I hope that the people involved will give due attention and make this course a part of our education system.

Ayurveda encouraged in foreign nations too!

guptashubhranshu's picture

Dear Lakshya, that was a correct point to be stated...Even ayurveda today has broken all barriers of limitations with respect to place and has reached foreign nations... Now I feel soon there would be a scenario when ayurveda would allure more popularity and then may be one day B.Pharm courses might include ayurveda as a part of curriculum.

I too feel the need to change

I too feel the need to change the scenario and let's hope the day comes soon.

Ofcourse!!

Dear Lucky,
I feel that it will help us..
Being an Indian where ayurveda drugs are highly influenced, I think we can have source to implement what you have expressed.
And as you told, there is a good demand now a days, and once again the genera is looking for natural sources rather than or equivalent to synthetic sources. I feel so....

I too feel this

lucky_pharmacist's picture

Dear Eswar, I too feel this and wish that these courses should be approved by the competitive authorities. But due care must be given to utilize the resources & knowledge properly. If we take an overview we see that the people with knowledge of the ayurvedic system are less and those are not even sufficient for the ayurvedic colleges either. So this will be another issue to discuss.
