Health Screening Services: Silent Killer: B.P.
Bood pressure as silent killer? Must be sounding unusual. But the fact is this because it usually has no symptoms. Some people may not find out they have high blood pressure until they have trouble with their heart, brain, or kidneys. High blood pressure (hypertension) killed 56,561 people in the United States in 2006. (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4621
Blood Pressure, almost everybody experienced that either personally or someone in family.... proper screening should be done to avoids its fatal effects...there are few things that is related to High Blood pressure... When high blood pressure is not found and treated, it can cause: The heart to get larger, which may lead to heart failure.
Heart failure a well known term, is a condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood throughout the body. Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped or is about to stop working. It means that your heart is not able to pump blood the way that it should. The heart can’t fill with enough blood or pump with enough force, or both. Small bulges (aneurysms [AN-u-risms]) form in blood vessels. Common locations where people can get aneurysms are: The main artery from the heart (aorta); Arteries in the brain, legs, and intestines; and The artery leading to the spleen. Blood vessels in the kidney narrow, which may cause kidney failure. Arteries throughout the body “harden” faster, especially those in the heart, brain, kidneys, and legs. This can cause a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or amputation of part of the leg. Blood vessels in the eyes burst or bleed, which may cause vision changes and can result in blindness.
Call Your Doctor When… Your blood pressure is higher than normal, and you have: Severe headache, or Chest pain, or Numbness, or Tingling in: Face Limbs Precautions should be taken & its fatal effects can be avoided by routine monitoring of Blood Pressure..

it is difficult to detect.
Dear Mr. Shiv Mazumdar
Your blog points to some important points. But let me tell you some things which I am noticing in people around me. A sugar test or a cholesterol test is clear , unambigious and confirmed and unarguable. B.P measurement is not like that. For one person at the same time, two people (medical people) may record B.P and tell different values and you do not know whom to believe. It changes temporarily when you climb stairs, run or when you are in stress. So it is possible for people with high B.P to keep arguing " No, No, this nurse is always reporting wrong values. My B.P is actually normal; Wo'nt I know by some symptoms if my B.P varies?"
So that is the difficulty with B.P patients.
Can you suggest a way out of this situation?

Important points to be considered for B.P. measurement
Dear Mam,
These are the few additional tips to be considered while going for B.P. measurement
Steps to Follow before Taking Your Blood Pressure
1) Don’t use 30 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure: Caffeine,Alcohol, or Tobacco.
2) Rest 3-5 minutes before taking your blood pressure.
3) Sit comfortably. Legs and ankles uncrossed and Back supported
Tips for Accurate Use
1) Take your blood pressure at consistent times, such as in the morning and in the evening.
2) Use the same arm whenever you take your blood pressure. Note -- many digital monitors are meant for use only on the left arm.
3) Don’t measure your blood pressure immediately after you wake in the morning. Wait an hour or so. If you exercise after waking, take your blood pressure before exercising.

B.P.Variation is normal
Its normal to have some cyclic variation in blood pressure, so the differences in the pressures are not that surprising to any medical professionals, especiall in high b.p. patients . Average of 3 readings taking in 15 minutes intervals gives appropriate numbers ...
Thank You.
Thank You.

Avoiding Hypertension
Dear faria Zarrin,
As you mentioned exact cause is difficult to mention, so the diet & exercise had a important role, but more specifically the primary cause will have major role.
Controlling all secondary parameter might control it properly.

Shiv
