Problem in healthcare

Dear friends

One major problem in our healthcare field is this. The doctor prescribes the medicines but the patient is not consuming them in the proper manner, so proper results are not obtained. This is where a pharmacist, who has knowledge about medicines and who is more accessible to the patient can help by giving proper advice to the patient.

We observed that doctors prescribe cetrizine hydrochloride tablets and cough syrups containing chlorpheniramine maleate ( sometimes both are prescribed at the same time) and the patients come out of the doctors' chambers without any knowledge about the drowsiness that is likely to be caused by these drugs. in such situations pharmacist can play a crucial role.

Friends, I want to continue my series on patient counseling. I am writing what we actually told our patients. We took most of the material from United Stated Information for the patient and United States Advice for the Patient volumes and CIMS.Many practicing pharmacists must be reading this. I want discussion on the technical points also. I want to write about how we advised a patient who was prescribed oral iron medication.

. You are given oral iron because you are aneamic. . You are given this medicine for a period of one month and you must use the full course. . Take it every day night, two hours after dinner.

. Iron should not be taken along with any milk food or breakfast or meal because its absorption is severely limited if taken along with food.

Association of community pharmacists of India launched at Manipal

Patients and health care professionals in India are deprived of drug information services, and pharmaceutical related services which enrich the therapeutics in developed countries. The pharmacists in our country are restricting to areas of drug formulation and related industrial aspects. The patient education which is essential for safe medication is not systematically made available through out the country. As a result of this there are many pitfalls in the health care delivery. Patients in India are at great risk of irrational use and have no resources to address the drug information needs of the patient.
