Introduction-

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoulene (BHT) are one of the most commonly used preservatives used, both in food and drugs. BHA and BHT are derivatives of anisole and toulene respectively; as quite evident by their names.

Pharmacology-
BHA and BHT act as free radical scavenger. They preferentially get oxidized themselves instead of the food or drug products and hence prevent their oxidative damage and deterioration.
