Embracing HIPAA's Ethics

Pharmaceutical Executive, Aug 2, 2002 To win consumers' trust and loyalty, pharma companies should look to the privacy regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to guide their direct-to-consumer (DTC) and web strategies. HIPAA provides the standard for using and managing individually identifiable health information. Its underlying ethical principles are based o­n the cornerstones of the Fair Information Practices Act of 1974: disclosure, authorization, and clarity.
