So are nutraceuticals drugs or food or ….?

Supplements are products that provide essential nutrients and as the name implies, are to be supplemented with something else. Their main name is to prevent deficiencies in case of an unbalanced diet or to treat or prevent diseases.
Foods are to be ingested for nutritive, therapeutic and sometimes, aromatic value.
Drugs, however, are used to treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent a disease and/or are intended to affect the structure of the body.
So what are they then? Drugs or food?
This has been one of the most controversial issues in the FDA history. Manufacturers tout the supplement/food angle but the FDA has to look at the drug angle. Many people call glucosamine and digitalis foods and not drugs and this is accepted to be correct around the world.
On one hand, many say that nutraceuticals do not require regulations because they have unreliable benefits (work for some, not for others) and that they are as "safe" as foods. Foods are generally regarded as safe by the government.
But then, there are some foods and herbs that can be toxic and even deadly for example some mushrooms (toadstools for us scientific people).
Among the advantages of requiring regulation, safety and efficacy are asssured. However, this will cause many drugs from smaller companies, which cannot afford to put their products through new drug testing,to never get into the market.
Regulation however, is important: because clients need to know how to use nutraceuticals and in what combinations. Also, to have some assurance of product safety in the animals they are being given to and product purity,so that we know the ingredients for sure.

Vit. B complex??

guptashubhranshu's picture

Hey nirupama , that was an interesting controversy. But in which category you would put vitamin B-complex capsules; food or drug? Because, vitamin is a part of daily diet in food and also it has pharmacological effects as that of drugs....Please reply....

nice question....
well more than pharmacological effect as a drug, i've always considered it acts only to improve our general health condition....u know, prevention of ulcers, clearer skin etc.
so i guess i'd call it a supplement, perhaps because you dont always need a prescription for it,so it is in a way, an OTC.
hope that helps!
