Automated SEC of Low Molecular Mass Heparins According to Pharmaeuropa

Low molecular mass heparins are salts of sulphated glucosaminoglycans having a mass average molecular mass less than 8000. At least 60% of the total mass has a molar mass less than 8000.

Low molecular mass heparins are obtained by fractionation or depolymerization of natural origin heparin. Batch-to-batch consistency is ensured by demonstrating that the mass average molecular mass and the mass percentage within defined molar mass ranges lower than 8000 are not less than 75% and not higher than 125% of the mean value stated as type specification.

The insider

Pharmaceutical sales representatives who place most of their detailing emphasis on physicians may very well be overlooking their best asset and ally – nurses. Representing the largest healthcare occupation (with more than 2 million jobs), nurses are typically more visible and accessible than physicians, particularly in today's climate, where physicians are forced to see more patients in less time and are saddled with time-consuming paperwork. Beyond that, nurses spend more one-on-one time with patients and are often the first to hear complaints, requests and general feedback on prescription drugs, which makes them an increasingly vital resource for sales forces.

Cancer patients in trials do better with palliative care

Cancer treatment may be enhanced when interventions designed to improve patients' physical, functional, emotional and social well-being are provided during clinical trials, according to a study by researchers at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. "In the past, it's been an either/or situation: Seriously ill patients have been told they can have a clinical trial or they can go home and focus on quality of life," said Frederick J. Meyers, professor and chair of internal medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center and director of the West Coast Center for Palliative Education and Research. "In our opinion, that's not an acceptable choice. Why can't patients have both?" For full article Click Here

New blood pressure guidelines issued

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has released new clinical practice guidelines for the prevention, detection and treatment of high blood pressure. The guidelines, which were approved by the coordinating committee of the NHLBI's National High Blood Pressure Education Program, feature altered blood pressure categories, including a new "prehypertension" level that covers about 22% of American adults or about 45 million persons. The new guidelines, which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (vol. 289, no. 19), also streamline the steps by which doctors diagnose and treat patients, and recommend the use of diuretics as part of the drug treatment plan for high blood pressure in most patients.

CDC: One in three adults has arthritis

One in three U.S. adults is affected by arthritis or chronic joint symptoms, according to a state-by-state survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new data put the number of adults with arthritis or chronic joint symptoms at 70 million (33%), an increase over the previous estimate that 43 million had arthritis. Researchers said the earlier estimate was probably too low and that arthritis-related questions on the new survey more accurately capture undiagnosed persons with chronic joint symptoms. For

Get into gear

I like this saying mostly because of the humor in its truthfulness. So many of us in sales, myself included, have gears we never use. I think it’s because we get comfortable at a certain speed, are afraid of a change or challenge, or simply don’t want to take the trouble or effort required to pick it up a notch or two. Over the course of my career, I’ve really taken this saying to heart. I have examined which gears I’ve been using and which ones I have not. In doing so, I’ve found that many of the rules that apply to bike riding also apply to sales.

U.S. citizens least happy with care

A study published in the journal Health Affairs (vol. 21, no. 3) found that citizens of the United States were more likely to be dissatisfied with their access to healthcare than citizens of Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom or New Zealand. Citizens with low incomes across all countries also ranked the quality of their healthcare lower. The study was based on telephone surveys of nationally representative, noninstitutionalized adult populations in each of the five countries during April and May 2001Fot full article Click Here.
