Treatment and Disposal of Bio-medical Wastes

Dr. Preeti S.Rawat
Urban solid waste has always attracted the attention of environmental activists, civic administrators, and the common man; however there is lack of full-fledged knowledge and information about some other special sources of waste and its management.
One such waste is bio-medical waste generated from hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and general practitioners, dispensaries, blood banks, animal houses and research institutes. A significant amount of this waste poses a grave danger to the staff, patients and the entire population at large if this waste is not handled and disposed using scientific guidelines. In our study we made an attempt to present and understand the methodology of waste management at various organizations across Mumbai and Navi-Mumbai. The studies conducted in two phases have indicated that a good majority of the organizations are in compliance with the government set standards.
