Indian Pharm D - No. 1 employer would be Pharmaceutical Industries

A message for future Pharm D Doctors in India, Yes you would be titles as Doctors. There is a worry about job opportunities of Indian Pharm Ds in India!!!!!! I have no sadness that I could not study Pharm D because I am teaching it now. I mean at present if you ask me to select a program - for me, in and around, height or depth the first preference is Pharm D. Many expect the Hospitals or Chain pharmacies (with reasonable pay) in India as the main anticipated employer of Pharm D graduates. And many are afraid that these job sectors are not yet pre-equipped for holding Pharm Ds in India. I am wondering that the prime (No.1) sectors which need the service of Pharm Ds are the pharmaceutical industries. They make new medicines and they need the professionals first than any other sector. Then the second priority comes to the hospitals of pharmacies where it is used or distributed. Production is may be one among ten divisions of an industry where Pharm Ds may not be needed. See the other nine where Pharm D is the first choice for an Industry: 1. Clinical Research (for clinical trials - in thousands) 2. Pharmacovigilance (mandatory now for all companies - in thousands) 3. Research & Development (In hundreds) 4. Medical Writing (In hundreds) 5. Product Managers (In hundreds) 6. Regulatory affairs (In hundreds) 7. Correspondents & Trainers (In hundreds) 8. Top level medical representatives (In thousands) 9. Or more is your home work...... Best wishes for a wonderful future,

This blogs clearly envisions us the future of PHARM-D professionals... I would like to know whether our Indian Pharmaceutical companies are making pharmacovigliance surveys and maintaining records for the same?? If yes, presently are they done by B.Pharm graduates or other graduates come into play ??

Yes Santhosh, It is mandatory now for the pharmaceutical companies to do and report Pharmacovigilance to the authorities. B. Pharms also have important roles in the field. My B.Pharm friends are working.

Good to hear about this... I had visited a pharma company (bulk drug) unit in which i found many people who are working over there were B.Sc and M.Sc completed people and the density of pharma people is 1-2 % I suppose... the inner talk is that the science graduates are equal in skill set to that of an B.pharm graduate moreover science graduates are willing to work for less pay then B.Pharmers that's why many companies employ more degree graduates; I heard this from the people over there.... Similar is the case with Medical writing and Marketing representatives where we find more of science graduates.. If this continues more of those jobs habitants will be B.Sc or M.Sc people.... To be frank, I was not against other science degree people... Do we need some professional improvement to make us jobs at graduate level??

Yes many medical doctors, MSc, BSc, graduates are working in Industries based on the needs. Except medical Doctors others are not a replacement for pharmacy graduates. May be the Pharm Ds could share the needs of some companies with medical doctors also. Many companies have ungraduated labours too. Companies are multi-professional organizations.

I think industries prefer to take Post graduate student who did M.pharm specializations when compared to pharm D professionals in various departments of industries. Options for a pharm D student is to work in hospitals r pharmacies r clinical pharmacy or to go abroad and of course pharmacovigilance. Is this correct sir?

Bulk drug always been chemistry graduates (B.Sc, M.Sc, and PhD(chemistry) dominant area as it needs more expertise in Chemistry . Its their expertise area like formulation companies (making tablets/capsules) are for pharmacy graduates . I don't think your demand is right :-) . Its like going to Telangana and expecting Andhra people to "dominate" business in their area...

Khan Sir, Why cant our M.Pharm (Medicinal Chemistry) graduates can be a good option for bulk drug industries ?? Since our M.Pharm chemistry graduates are equal in professional competence levels and skills in comparison with with M.Sc chemistry people.....

Dear Sir, One of my student just applied to a pharmacy in usa as he completed Pharm D in India. He got an interview call soon. The Indian Pharm D will be eligible to write equallency exams in other countries - which is not there for B.Pharm graduates from India.

sir, To get register as pharmacist in us and canada, what is the procedure involved ? Do we have to write an exam ? If so what is the eligibility for that exam ? as you have mentioned "the Indian Pharm D will be eligible to write equallency exams in other countries?" What is this equivalence exams for our Indian Pharm D people?

hello sir, Im final year B.pharm student,very much intrested in serving health care industry in hospital setting.so after this I would like to join in pharmD course.I heard that the post baccalaureate courses will be stopped giving in any institution from the next year,as NABP is not recougnising the P.B. course.. IS that true? If so what should I do to get eligible to sit for FPGEE and Naplex... and how would be the job openings for post baccalaureate students in hospitals in India after they complete their 3 yr course...? Please help me with your suggestions sir. Thank u, -shivsagar

Hello Sir Even though the subjects are a same( may be more) and the standards of teaching are equal, when it comes to the industry, the practical skills are given more priority. So when the hospital pharmacy is given more preference in the Pharma D course, is there any competence between the M Pharm, and the Pharma D students in this aspect,(regard less of the personal interest of student to attain practical knowledge). I heard that last 2yrs of the pharma D course is maximum of hospital practice. So please give me a clarification about the variation in the practical knowledge attained by both the categories of students.

There are many MD pharmacology doctors are employed in industries. They have no learning or practical industry exposures as part of their curriculam.

Really your blog is like a ray of light for students who are lost in the dark woods of ignorance regarding the PharmD course sir! From what you and my friends have mentioned above I would assume that by the time the first one or two batches of PharmD graduates comes out, they will immediately be taken into employment without the benefit of a doubt.

it is real great to see the oppurtunities of pharm D. but the question is how far will this be feasble in countries like india! as over here the pharmacist is given an secondary preference than other professionals. as far as industry is concerned they surely have a number of jobs waiting but with concern to the hospital the preference shall not go for them. untill and unless the system changes!. i hope to see an much more eloberate information on this please do help me out to find more info. i am very thankful for ur update on it!!.

Pharm.D PB is recognized in USA by case to case evaluation and the eligibility to write FPGEE is given. Please refer to the FPGEE bulletin at their site. Recently Dr. B. Suresh said, the Pharm.D PB will be stopped only if there are less number of students apply for joining it.

dear sir, As we all know that there has been a lot of debate regarding the Pharm.D program in India & there has been skeptical views towards the role of Pharm.D in pharmacy education in India. To this context these are actually very important information regarding the job profile of a future Pharm.D. but still it is not clear that how these jobs are going to vary from that of a B.pharm or a M.pharm. graduate? thank you
