Dendrimers : Polymers of 21st Century

Dendrimer is coined from two greek words - dendron, meaning tree, and meros, meaning part.

A dendrimer is generally described as a macromolecule, which is characterized by its highly branched 3D structure that provides a high degree of surface functionality and versatility. Dendrimers have often been refered to as the “Polymers of the 21st century”.

Carbon nanotubes - A Novel Drug Delivery System

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field of science which deals with objects of strikingly small size. In this multidisciplinary science the discovery of a new structure known as “carbon nanotube” has widened the science and application of nanotechnology.

Green Chemistry

The object of Green Chemistry is the reduction of chemical pollutants flowing to the environment.

The Chemistry and the Environment Division of EuCheMS has assumed Green Chemistry as one of its areas of interest, but one question to solve is where Green Chemistry should be placed within the context of Chemistry and the Environment.

SpecificTherapy: Enzyme Prodrug Therapy

Well known classical prodrug design represents non-specific chemical approach to mask undesirable drug properties such as bitterness, limited bioavailability, chemical instability, insolubility etc. whereas novel targeted prodrug design represents a smart therapeutic approach for directed and efficient drug delivery.

Nano Technology Based Drug Delivery System

Nanoparticles hold tremendous potential as an effective drug delivery system. In this review we discuss recent developments in nanotechnology for drug delivery. To overcome the problems of gene and drug delivery, nanotechnology has gained interest in recent years. Nanosystems with different compositions and biological properties have been extensively investigated for drug and gene delivery applications.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a technique used to enhance the absorption of drugs across biological tissues like skin.

It promotes the transfer of charged ionic drugs and posibbly high molecular weight substances such as peptides.

Electric current is applied through two electrodes, placed on the patients skin.

Stealth Liposomes : The Nano-sized particles

Liposome are nano-sized phoSspholipid bubbles with a bilayered membrane structures. Many of the applications of liposome in drug delivery systems have been limited by their short circulation as a result of rapid uptake into recticuloendothelial (mononuclear-phagocyte) system. Hence many approaches were taken to formulate liposome with prolonged circulation (stealth liposome).

Insilco based drug discovery

The pharmaceutical business in the global environment will have to be competitive. The central activities of pharmaceutical research are drug design and delivery. Drug designs the design or discovery of molecular structures which fit certain receptor sites in the protein. The role of computational modeling in drug design is highly developed, dominated by a mature methodology involving techniques such as Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSAR), Ligand Docking, and Molecular Dynamics.

Cryonics - Life after Death

While some believe it’s impossible to know whether there is life after death, belief in immortality is timeless. People of all times and places in history have believed that the human soul survives death. If there is no consciousness beyond the grave, then life has fooled almost everyone from the Pharaohs of Egypt to the modern cryobiologists.
