This time I would like to discuss with the readers about the news of antibiotics sales in India came very recently in Times of India. I think this blog entry would help the persons who could not catch that news about the growth of antibiotics in India.Anti infective segment was one of the leading therapeutic segment in Indian pharmaceutical market.(15.6% - Cygnus research 2005). Now, antibiotics started to come in the list of top ten pharmaceutical brands of Indian pharmaceutical retail market in the first quarter of this year.
For the first time in the history of Indian pharmaceutical market, at least four major antibiotic and antibacterial brands figuring in the top brands. The respective brands are;
Augmentin - Glaxo SmithKline.
Mox – Ranbaxy.
Zifi – FDC Ltd.
Taxim – Alkem.
Augmentin is ranked four with cumulative sales of Rs.27.4 crore, Mox came in fifth rank with a sale of Rs.26.6 crore and Zifi at number seven which made a cumulative sale of Rs.23.6 crore. The last antibiotic medicine Taxim is in ninth position with a net sale of Rs. 22 crore in the same quarter from January to March.
Another important aspect is that they all have shown a huge double digit growth in recent time i.e about 30- 40% in one month. According to the experts and doctors this huge growth is attributed by the less side effects shown by these drugs and are used to treat wide variety of infections.
Now you will be having questions about the number one brand in Indian pharmaceutical market. During the first quarter in this year, cough and cold medicine Corex is the number one brand with a net sale of Rs. 36.65. Painkiller Voveran is in the second position and made a sale of Rs. 10.54 crore within a single month of March.
The chronic segment which includes cardio vascular, diabetics and central nervous system also have a major role in the total therapeutic segment like antibiotics and antibacterials. The dominant nature of the anti infective medicines in Indian pharma market is the reason why the major pharma players still focusing on the development of antinfectives. Strategic alliance recently made by Ranbaxy with Merck is targeting the development of new antiinfectives is a clear evidence for this fact.

What do you think this report sugests?
If the antibiotics are becoming so much at the top overtaking the antidiabetics and other drugs, is it a good sign or not. If you think in the industry point of view you'll see it as positive, more sales more profit. But if you see in the sense of logical thinker, you'll find it somewhat erratic. Because if antibiotics are being used so widely it gives the output as
1. The health of people is going down and they are being infected more.
2. The prescribing habits are poor which are causing the huge growth in these drugs.
3. There will be more resistance by microbes and may lead to further need of higher antibiotics.
Now that’s my opinion, I'd like to hear your point of view as well.
thank you..
dear Lakshya,
thanking you for your comment..I was just trying to explain about the antibiotic brands which came into the line of top ten brands in india and the news released on that in some dailies recently. simply, my intention was to provide the readers with some of the marketing figures in the indian retail pharma market and aspects related to that..that doesnt mean that i am not aware of the things which you have pointed out....
ofcourse, not only the infections but the disease segments like diabetes, cardio vascular are also trying to touch the peak in our country. but no one in the pharmaceutical industry or the future industrial people like us, will be happy on these dangerous facts and terrible truth(who are thinking logically and ethically..)
if ranbaxy is toping the indian pharma industry that doesnt means that ranbaxy people are praying for the wide spread of diseaes in india..
in short i was trying to explain about the top brands in india and the newly entered antibiotics in that list in the dimension of marketing..(earlier that was filled by some cardio vascular drugs and anti diabetic drugs)..
some time the list may change in the next quarter or next fiscal year..the marketing or sales figures also may change..a man specilized in marketing like me may project out the figures again ,ofcourse for the knowledge of the public..that is his duty and responsibility..
I am really greatful for your opinions...expecting and cordially inviting more and more opinions from you in future..
Antibiotics –Revenue Generating Segment
Nice work Praseen,
Yes I totally agree with this, antibiotic segment contributes high percentage of revenue for major pharmaceutical companies in India. But the major question prevailing now a days is their irrational prescription by health care professionals and this is one of the reason why large number of antibiotics are getting out of date and obsolete day by day from the market due to development of resistance.
Thank you
yes..as you said irrational prescription by the doctors are there..not only in the case of antibiotics but also in other prescription drugs..therapeutic segment of infections are growing drastically in the pharmaceutical market..pharma companies are now focusing on this segment just like diabetes and CVD..(Strategic alliance made between Ranbaxy and Merck for the R&D in antiinfectives.). As an outcome more antibiotics are coming up...
Antibiotics for free
In india health care professions causing this. In USA, some of the chain pharmacies giving Antibiotics for FREE to the coustomers...So, where we are going ?
http://www.physorg.com/news80925337.html
I went through the link
I went through the link you have sent..yes they are giving some antibiotics at free of cost ..but to the patients with prescription... I think that is simply a part of the retailers business strategy..if they are giving the drugs to a patient without prescription, the case is different..Even Indian government hospitals are giving free anti TB drugs to the patients diagnosed with TB..again to the patients with PRESCRIPTION only...Then..?
thanking you for the comment..
Customer is God!
I know what do you mean. But the problem is for doctors or even pharmacist, every one has to see patient as customer and we are in service to serve them. Some times "customers " demand health care professionals what they want mainly due motivated by TV advertisements. Doctors are some times help less . Some expert fear this free concept may increase antibiotic precription volume in USA....eventually resistance to those antibiotics
