Cramming - An Adrenaline in the Education System
PLEASE DO NOT GET PRESONAL, THESE ALL ARE SUCH FEELINGS WITH WHICH I AM LIVING FROM LAST 6-7 YEARS.
Are you a scholar? Are you a good crammer? If you are good in this practice then may be you are one of the rankers of you college/ university / board.
I am taking example of myself. When I was in First year, I felt that students comes from English medium always obtain good scores in exams and few of the students from gujarati medium may reach to that level. As gujarati medium student get time to conversant with english. But after 1st year, whole scenario gets changed. Students who scored well in 12th science beat the student of English medium. These all are happened because in our system cramming is a prominent part of the education system.
Our system teach us that “Well you can mug, better you can score”
But why these scenarios we always face? Is there any problem in our system? I will say YES. There is a problem with our education system. Whenever syllabus revised; subject gain weight and student start to pass from their nightmare. Sharing of knowledge decrease. Many times I felt that faculty who are not fully conversant with their own topics, knowledge transfer to the student get restricted. In such condition, if student arise a question, either respondent may not reply or a counter question strikes on a student, and so student don’t ever get a chance to solve his problem.
Implement in this system must be brought, and students must be benefited from the system. We know that our system have very good knowledgable faculties but why their knowledge is not sufficiently reach to the student?
Round & round, more or less, but these types of situation we are facing from Board examination to Undergraduate level or many times upto Post graduation level also.
Why these so happened?????????

cramming
Dear Pratyesh
Good topic!
Crammers definitely get good marks and rightly so. When correcting a paper, when the entire answer is neatly written , how can we not give marks? We definitely give marks and so they get the ranks.
What about the concept presenters? They also get the marks if they show the concept comprehensively presenting all the ideas necessary. If they can do some discussion which the crammers cannot do then they get even better marks.
But the main difference between crammers and concept presenters comes- when they appear for interviews and when they are actually perfoming their jobs- concept people excel because they have managed to ingrain the topics.
Crammers excel when giving lectures and seminars because subject will easily come to the top of their brains as they are presenting.
Life has something for everyone!
Re:cramming
Yes mam, in that sense you are absolutely right. But mam, we should design such system, in which exams contains Multiples questions, more time slots provided for practical. Because in the pharmacy field one must have practical knowledge, and to obtain so design must have more practical as compared to theory.
So such design will filter out those students who are not rally crammers. And so they can also get their own status, dignity. They can feel also that they are also the part of the system and such motivated people will provide more benefit to the pharmacy field.
my experience....
hi pratyesh....i really admire your topic....But it's not always true...I have seen 99% of toppers of college are good crammers..But even there are people who top inspite having very good conceptual background....Sometimes, students are conceptually so well that that they get grip of the whole subject as it is without getting the necessity of reading it for 2nd time...i accept that the current education system needs adequate change to abolish the cramming by students....
Re : my experience....
Hi subhranshu...
I am agreeing that few of the students have good grips on those subjects, that they can easily understand the concept. I am happy for those but i dont like those studnets who fight with such students neck to neck in the examination by just cramming. I want to change those scenario, to do so we must have to redesign the system that have the multiple questions, more practicals, more industrial visits and projects in industries. These all allow those crammers to change themselves into good conceptual students, which this pharmacy field need actually.
i agree
yea pratyesh, i definitely agree with you.Even i hate those people who cram and become toppers.I feel the concept presenters are enough powerful than crammers to obtain good marks.A concept presenter, who is also a good paper, vocal and answer presenter can crack any examinations as well as interviews, if he understands that ongoing situation...
Re: i agree
Yes shubranshu, if we take a one step towards this all system to set them free from the cramming, many of our colleagues will also help us to find out the solution. And so, the system does.
how??
what do you think, how can we upgrade the condition of education, except setting us as an exception to present student mentality of cramming facts???I think we must discuss this topic to it's greatest detail...
Re: how??
Yes, I had thought about the solutions to sort out this problem
1. Each student must face an exam after 12th's examination. Like a common aptitude test. In our Gujarat this type of exam is started named GUJ-CAT. Each student who want to go in either Engg. or Pharmacy stream, have to go through this. Marks of GUJ-CAT are also considered at the time of admission.
2. In each college a student committee should be constituted who keep track on the results of all students, and must council them with the teacher’s helps to find out the problem. Because many time it happened that student can understand but can’t express.
3. More Weight age to be given to the practicals and theory class must be carried out in the respective labs, so student get interact and get the practical information.
4. Nowadays, company like Stayam Computers, started to train H.S.C. passed student, because it is always found that student get marks but will remain dumb in the practical concept. So education system also set integration with the industry who likes to teach student in a way they want. So, each student can get a job and safety for hi/her future.
So, by these ways we can keep cramming away from students.
My ideas of stopping cramming system!!!
I think if I could change this scenario, I would take the following measures:
1) The type of exam system might not change, but the type of questions comming in exam must change. The questions must be indirect and must require deep comceptual ideas to answer them, instead of just writing the mugged up answers. Stress must be laid over reasoning.
2) The exam paper must have partly descriptive and partly objective type, so that it satisfies both analytical skills as well as reasoning and answering abilities of students.
3) Practical should obviously be stressed upon, however, the experimentation must be made to do with accuracy and without any manipulations.
I feel its due to exam system
Dear Pratyesh, I should really appreciate you for taking up this issue, not only you but many of us (students) are facing this situation. If you can't cram you are sure to lose handful of marks. And our system is such that one who has knowledge and intelligence is seldom happy in this section. Crammers and Jammers (copiers) have their time hand they pick best of marks. One of my Guajarati friend here, has his own view to say he says when we say our first word in childhood its started by cramming, what an explanation for cramming!!!!!!
I personally feel cramming should not be a part of your study, try to understand the concept rather than to mug it. But you can't stop the crammers from doing all this until the system changes from exam oriented to education oriented.
Re: I feel its due to exam system
Yes lucky, I feel same here, As If you go against this system, it will not alllow you to grow up and if you go with system, it makes you deaf and dumb. But we must go through the problem and solve it. Let see, what others like to reply on this topic.
