Nano technology in Pharmaceutical Industry
Drug Delivery technology helps to transfer the drug from site of absorption to site of action. With the conventional therapies like Oral, Injections and topical formulations now transdermal, implant and nano technology are in demand. They have fewer side effects and more therapeutic effects which draw the attention of newer research towards them. We will discuss nano technology here.
Nano technology
The Greek prefix ‘Nano’ means ‘one billionth’ Nano technology mainly helpful in the encapsulated drugs for controlled delivery system.
It can apply in:
Ø Implants and prosthetics
Ø Diagnostics
Ø Drug delivery
Challenges
- High Cost for developing nano particles
- Lack of common vocabulary for the researchers to read the test results.
- Interdisciplinary field like biology, physics, material sciences, which helps to transfer knowledge among the researchers for better implementation in therapy.
Current Research
1. Smart Cell technology
This Technology used for diabetes therapy in which nano particles of size of 80 nanometers to 1 micrometer. Particles contain insulin molecule and sugar sensitive protein bonded to biodegradable polymers. Dosage from injected under the skin. As Blood glucose level increases, the Smart Cell glucose sensitive matrix breakdown and insulin will release. System mimics the action of pancreases.
2. Micro-electro-chemical Technology (MEMS)
Device TherFusorE uses this technology diabetes. It contains a disposable component of insulin and micro-needles which have login, metering and communication circuit attached to disposable unit. Unit delivers the dose as per requirement.
3. Medusa®
Technology developed by Flamel Technologie. It is a protein carrier technology consisting self assembled poly-amino acid nano particle system. This nano particle is stable in varying pH and can be sotred in liquid and dry forms. After injection of nano particles, they will release drug in the body.
4. In cancer therapy
Devise employed for cancer therapy are silica coated micelles, ceramic nano particles, dendrimers and cross liked liposomes. Device detect tumor cells in vivo terminate its action.
Conclusion
A new era is now emerging based on better therapeutic and more effective technology. Nano technology is one of them which help to suit as per individual need. In future we will get more benefits from this technology.
