Evaluation of a crude drug means its identification and determination of its purity and quality which can be attempted by different methods of evaluation depending upon the morphological and microscopical studies of the crude drug or physical and chemical behaviors. Plants contain many active constituents and the utility of a crude drug is due to its therapeutically active constituent, so it is necessary to isolate particular compound of interest.
Chenopodium album Linn lamb’s quarts belong to family Chenopodiaceae, found wild up to an altitude of 4.700m and cultivated throughout India and particularly Western Rajasthan, Kullu valley and Shimla. The herb is laxative, anthelmintic, carditonic, antiscorbutic, digestive and it is also used in diarrhea and jaundice. For present study authenticated dried leaves of Chenopodium album (RRI/BNG/Drug authentication2007-09/436) was used.
Pharmacognostical studies like organoleptic evaluation viz. colour, odor, Size and taste. Macroscopical evaluation viz. surface appearance and texture, lamina structur (Shape of lamina, margin, composition of lamina apex, base venation). Microscopy like T.S. of the leaf, powder microscopy and leaf constant viz. stomatal no., stomatal index, vein islet no.vein termination no., palisade ratio, physicochemical parameter that is Moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, water soluble ash, water soluble extractive value, alcohol soluble extractive value was determined and phytochemical screening of the petroleum ether, Benzene, Chloroform, Ethanol and Aqueous extract was evaluated and the show positive result for Alkaloids, Saponins, Phytosterols and Flavanoids
