All perfumes are mixtures of various compounds which may different in their volatility. If the fragrance smell generated is not uniform,. the impression that the perfume is reaching with the skin or its decomposing. Hence, different materials are used to control the release of the initial notes by complexing with the fast evaporating substances.
Fixation is not required in after-shave because it is only for short action. Fixation is essential in preparation where body is required as in powders. Fixation materials vary according to the type of the perfume being fixed.
Eg : Agents used for fixation are beacyl iseoeugerol, vanillin, sandal, benzoin, benzyl, benzoate diethyphthalate.
Addition of resins such as benzoin tolurto alcohol is done in fixation process as follows :
Alcohol is taken and the extract is allowed to mix with it and left undisturbed for a whole one month in a closed vessel. Only then the fixation is seen. This method is best effective in cologne type of perfumes
