. INTRODUCTION: They are defined as the aqueous solutions in which the medicament is dispersed either in the form of finely divided solids or coarse particles intended to apply to the nasopharyngeal tract. They are used to relieve nasal congestion, inflammation and for other purposes .They operate by the hand operated pump mechanism.
CONTENTS: Anti-histamines, sympathomimetic agents, antibiotic substances ,decongestant medicines.
ADVANTAGES :They possess rapid onset of action, enhanced bioavailability, particularly useful in the emergency cases especially for the asthmatic patients .They are effectively used in treating sinusitis, allergic conditions, Rhinitis.
PRECAUTIONS: Nasal spray should not be administered in upright condition unless which may lead to systemic absorption of the drug than the local effect. Patients should not overuse the product as it may lead to addiction, It should be properly labelled as “FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY”, cross contamination should be prevented by not allowing others to handle the spray.
RECENT ADVANCEMENTS:A double blind randomized nicotine spray was introduced for the cessation of smoking. Insulin is effectively administered in the form of spray which has rapid onset of action as the first pass metabolism is prevented and helping the diabetic patients to combat the disease with this innovative method
