Abbott Laboratories introduced a new Antibiotic FACTIVE into the market! Yesterday I found this news when I was reading a "Pharmacy Post", Canada's Drug Store news magazine, February,2007 edition.

FACTIVE (gemifloxacin mesylate) is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms in Respiratory Tract Infections caused by, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Staphylococcus aureus.

FACTIVE (gemifloxacin mesylate) can be taken with or with food and should be swallowed whole with a liberal amount of liquid.  The usual recommended dose in acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis is one 320 mg tablet daily for 5 days.  FACTIVE is available as white to off-white, oval, film-coated tablets. Each tablet contains gemifloxacin mesylate equivalent to 320 mg gemifloxacin.
