Fast dissolving drug delivery system offer a solution for those patients having difficulty in swallowing tablet or capsule etc. Diclofenac Sodium, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic and anti-inflammatory property was selected as the model drug. The poor aqueous solubility of the drug results in variable dissolution rate and hence poor bioavailability. In the present study, an attempt has been made to prepare fast dissolving tablet of the drug using sugars i.e. Sorbitol, Mannitol and polymers like HPMC, PVP by direct compression technique. The fast dissolving tablets were prepared by pure drug as well as solid dispersion of drug and beta-cyclodextrin. The tablets were evaluated for hardness, friability, weight variation, In-Vitro Dispersion time and In-Vitro Dissolution study. The stability studies showed no significant variations in all the parameters and were found to be stable. It was concluded that the fast dissolving tablet of poorly soluble drug can be made by direct compression technique using selective super disintegrates and solid dispersion showing enhanced dissolution and hence better patient compliance and effective therapy.
