EXERCISE BEFORE SLEEP
The Claim
Exercise more and you will sleep better at night.
The Facts
It has long been said that physical activity and better sleep go hand in hand. Burn more energy during the day, the thinking goes, and you will be more tired at night.
But only recently have scientists sought to find out to what extent this stands true. One study looked for answers by getting healthy children to wear actigraphs — devices that measure movement — and then seeing whether more activity during the day meant improved sleep.
It found that sleep onset latency — the time it takes to fall asleep once in bed — ranged from 10 minutes to more than 40 minutes. But physical activity and sleep onset were closely linked: every hour of sedentary activity resulted in an additional three minutes in the time it took to fall asleep at night. And the children who fell asleep faster slept longer.
Studies on adults have reached similar results, showing that an increase in physical activity improves sleep.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Being more physically active can lead to better sleep.

Exercising right before bed
Exercising right before bed or within about three hours of bedtime can actually make it harder to fall asleep. This surprises many people; it's often thought that a good workout before bed helps you feel more tired. In actuality, vigorous exercise right before bed stimulates your heart, brain and muscles -- the opposite of what you want at bedtime. It also raises your body temperature right before bed, which, you'll soon discover, is not what you want.
Everyone's body temperature naturally goes up slightly in the daytime and back down at night, reaching its low just before dawn. Decreasing body temperature seems to be a trigger, signaling the body that it's time to sleep. Exercise temporarily raises the body temperature as much as two degrees.
Twenty or 30 minutes of exercise is sufficient to keep the body temperature at this higher level for a period of four to five hours, after which it drops lower than if you hadn't exercised. This lower body temperature is what helps you sleep better. So if you exercise five to six hours before going to bed, you will be attempting to sleep at the same time your temperature is beginning to go down.
That's the best way to maximize exercise's beneficial effects on sleep.

Exercise just before sleep?
Dear Supriya
While I can totally accept the fact that good physical exercise helps one to sleep better; I am a little doubtful whether exercise just before you go to sleep can help you. Will you please verify on that? In earlier days they used to say " Take a walk after your supper." That used to be the habit of many people. But I seem to have read that , that practise is not totally good, though I am not very clear about it.

Dear Madam, As you are saying
Dear Madam,
As you are saying that increased physical activity can lead to better sleep….. Since increased physical activity increases the levels of adrenaline and nor-adrenaline producing stimulatory effects like increased heart beat etc.., thus preventing from being tired. If we are not tried then how can we get a better sleep?
