Let us set our house in order
In a meeting held in connection with National Pharmacy Week , this is what I said to the gathering which consisted mostly of pharmacy students:
The theme of our NPW stresses the point that patients must seek the advice of pharmacists regarding prescription drugs. It is imperative that all pharmacy students must have full knowledge regarding prescription drugs and also that pharmacists in our medical shops refrain from dispensing prescription drugs without prescriptions. All of you must possess a copy of the Schedule H which is a list of prescription drugs in India. There are nearly 560 drugs in this list. Go to medical shops, give the pharmacist a copy of Schedule H and remind him that he should not give prescription drugs without a prescription. Tell as many people as you can that they should not ask for a prescription drug without having a prescription.
If we can implement such rules then our profession will grow in values and will be respected by doctors as well as by general public.

Dear madam,
You had given a very nice idea which will definitely improves our Quality of life but i agreed with mr lakshya's n Manthan's views because now a days no one is practicing in this manner
I can understand this because i also have a small chemist shop n i am also feel that this is practically impossible in India today. It may be possible in future but for that lots of efforts required like educating patients, community pharmacy etc.so let's hope that it will be possible in future
Dear madam Thank you for
Dear madam
Thank you for such a lucid explanation for the theme of National Pharmacy week which says Ask your pharmacist for safe use of prescription drugs.I do agree with you madam we the young pharmacist should take an initiative to stop this system.
Set our house in order.
Dear Madam,
I always love reading your mails as you raise very ciritcal issues in this forum.
With respect to dispensing of non prescription medicines to patients in our country, i agree to what lakshya has said. But the ground realities are different. If one pharmacy shop stops giving medicine without prescription, the other will grab the opportunity. Just by promulguting a few Act we would not achieve anything.
We also need to take into account the financial background of people approaching a pharmacy shop without a prescription. Many people come from poor financial background or are daily wage earners who cannot afford sky rocketing consulting fees of doctors.
I know this because we had a medical shop in out town and i have seen innumerable such examples. If we can ensure that the products given without prescription are for simple ailments like cough, cold, mild fever it would not harm the profession or the patients.
But having said that, i must also emphasize that Schedule H drugs should never be dispensed without a prescription from a doctor. We need to sensitize pharmacists, pharmacy shopowners and consumers alike on this important issue.

Patient awareness is more important
Dear Madam, What you said is correct no doubt. But I had discussions with many pharmacists; they told me that it was not possible to stop giving medicine without prescription as most sales come from it. They too agree that it should not happen but say that, "If I don't give it someone else will, if this happens it is my loss, nothing is going to change so why should I not give the medicine?"
If we think that just by giving a copy of schedule H & reminding him about the prescription medicine will not serve the purpose. I think the pharmacy council should come into act & must warn all the pharmacists to stop giving medicines without prescription. Time limit should be given to them to control & stop their non-prescription sales, also the consumer or patient should be made aware of the hazards of self medication & improper medication taken without prescription. The movement must be massive & the doctors also should take care that they give proper medicine and keep back the prescription or tear it of so that no one else can use them or it cannot be repeated by any person. Patient awareness is more important than pharmacists.
massive movement is necessary
Dear Lucky
Thank you for responding in a most practical manner. But we are all taking for granted , a bad situation , in a most passive manner. There are many acts in our country but few are implemented. This is true with respect to dowry act, anticorruption act and so on. Can't we do anything about it? I thought we must at least remind ourselves the rule position.
