10000 crore for PHARMA R/D as govt. loans(bonds)............ a silver linning for indian pharma companies,at least on the paper
AT LEAST ONE DRUG OUT OF EVERY FIVE DISCOVERED IN THE WORLD SHOULD BE FROM INDIA BY 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well,at last govt woke wp to the calls of the needs of indian new drug less pharmaceutical companies. indian pharma needs money to discover new drugs for the country ,not to outlicense them to MNCs.
indian can discver a drug within half of the amount that cost in western world($1.2 billion). If the amount is released after the election that may result in at least one purely indian drug in the market(world).
but that need still a question mark. If that money be put for the drugs required by indian people (malaria.TB, kala azar etc.) or for the drugs for the western countries (lifestyle diseases drugs). NGOs are crying that people's money woulsd be used for the fullfilling the ambitious needs of the dredy indian pharmaceutical companies which are putting stress on the R/D of the drugs for lifestyle diseses. What would be the role of the govt. institution (NIPER,CDRIL,IISc,NCL) in that.
what do you think will be the impact of that move on indian pharma. ???????????
pls comment !!!!!

life-style diseases are becoming a part of india too
Dear Sir,
The question raised by you is well apt that Indian Pharmaceutical R&D companies are putting stress for life style diseases of the Western countries, this is more because the revenue generated from the UK and US market and From Rest of World countries is much more than India's domestic market alone because India still comes in the category of Developing country and life-style diseases are becoming a part of india too if you look at the situation in Metros.
Educational Institutes like NIPER, IISc, CDRI, NCL too are working on related projects but because of funds and lack of resources they are not able to come up with bright and innovative ideas that can serve the nation in the long run. But at the same time you'll be surprised to know that some of the Government funded institutes are working on the project of ORPHAN DISEASES which can serve our economy in the long term.

Drugs for malaria,TB , leishmaniasis
very true mam , NIPER(as i am a management student of NIPER ) itself working on the drugs for malaria,TB.leishmaniasis at various level (lead optimisation in pharmacoinformatics lab, NCE research by medicinal chemistry students & activity monitoring by pharmacological students ).
but still we could achieve much in the span of 10 years of its establishment (what a pity ). It is not becos of Lack of ideas or talent ,it is becos of not feeling the pulse of the country (marketing point of view ). we are today dependent upon the MNCs to come up with a investment bowl & collaborate with indian's poor pharma industry (astrazeneca & torrent for TB , roche & ranbaxy for malaria).
CSIR is coming with open source drug discovery(OSDD)system for TB, becos of the failure of the academic institute approach.
SO better option would be to let companies to contribute in the research for these disaeses in collaboration with these academic institutes. companies are liable to give back the loan taken from govt also.
but what is the guranteethat it would be quite effectively utilised by the academic institure alone. as they lack
professional approach
commercial zeal
motivation to serve the country people........................................... aren't they ????????????
pls comment !!!!!!!!!

Good news for the indian pharma sector
hello dear....
The role of the goverment research institutes would be tremendous because these are the places where the EINSTEINS of india work....dedicate their lives for the development of innovation..the role cannot be ignored, inspite the lack of funds the kind of work the perform is extraordinary...
The people suffering for the infectious diseases are millions but the presence of the other millions suffering from the life style diasese as well as cancer can also not be ignored....
A balance should be striked taking into consideration all the factors...then only it would be fruitful for all the sectors of the society in india.....we shouild also take in consideration that our condition is very much different form the west and we cannoy simply try to mimic the west.
The Indian pharmaceutical sector which lacks in R&D will be boosted with this steps...if it is implemented.

Research based work
I completely support your view of collaboration of academic institutes and companies for research based studiesbut indeed you'll be surprised to know that some institutes in Delhi (I dont know the exact name) have thier tie-up with Ranbaxy Research Laboratories, Gurgaon with their clinical research. Ranbaxy has set up a special clinical division for this research based work where in the students from the college perform their studies at company's laboratory which proves beneficial both for the industry as well as the institute.
Many colleges like Manipal, BITS, NMIMS (NMIMS-where Im a PG student) institutes have their Practice stations i.e. have tie-ups with Industries wherin students go to do their internship which is a part of curriculum, this practise is indeed helpful both for the industry as well as the institute. This short exposure of the industry during our internship helps build a professional and commercial zeal among many of us. It actually helps each of us to analyze our key areas and our inclination towards research and research-based studies. This work/research is further fruitful when students join in for a Ph.D. program.
All the best for your future endeavours.
Regards & Best Wishes,
Ankita

Ideas between Industry and Academia
Great Interaction going on,
My opinion is:
Indians are no way less than others in research and knowledge. Comparing to the earlier days now the R&D zone is very active and starting excelling in its own way. The investments are also increased solely and we may expect better results if the same josh was maintained........
As U and other participants rightly said there should be a collaborative exchange of work as well as ideas between Industry and Academia. There is plenty of will power and knowledge with us and only lack is support which may be from Govt. or even from the profits of an organization.
We should appreciate the contribution from companies as well as some premiere institutes who are in the race of collaborative research work with companies. Let us hope the best in near future.
Coming to the area of work, every ailment is an undesired one and remedy for any of them is appreciable, only thing is PRIORITY levels.
Hope the best will be entertained in future.
Good Luck and maintain such interactive sessions...
